Some things you should know before
you consider adding a Siberian Husky to your family:
Pros:
The Siberian Husky loves everyone,
even strangers.
Shedding occurs usually once a year
in a male and twice a year for a non spayed female and the dander is less
allergenic than other breeds.
They are very versatile, good in
the show ring, obedience trials (if you have a lot of patience and a sense
of humor;-), tracking and they make excellent therapy dogs.
They don't bark incessantly, they're
good natured, demonstrative and very playful, and can be smarter than you
are.
They are usually very good with
other dogs and children.
Cons:
The Siberian Husky is not a watch
dog. They are just too friendly and don't bark enough to warn of
approaching strangers. They also howl.
When they do shed, they shed profusely,
think large garbage bad full.
They require obedience training,
but are easily bored with repetition and "military type" training methods
usually don't work well with Siberians, they respond better to food or
praise methods or "clicker" training.
They are not usually good with cats
or small mammals since they consider them game, they may be ok if they
are raised with them.
They make an art of running away.
Only a high fence (and usually on the ground deterrents) will keep Siberians
home and then only if they get plenty of exercise. They also aren't
a dog you can let off leash, if you want a dog to go to the park and play
frisbee with a Siberian is not for you.
They need plenty of human companionship
and can become destructive if left alone too much. They also usually do
better in a multiple dog family.
They love to dig and chew when bored.
